Philosophy of Family & Youth Ministry

Philosophy of Family & Youth Ministry

Goals

  • Equip and assist KBC parents, especially fathers, to carry out their mandate to evangelize and disciple their own children, “bringing them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord” (Eph. 6:4).
  • Promote honor and obedience of all children and youth toward their parents (Eph. 6:1-3).
  • Further evangelize and disciple children and youth of KBC homes as a supplement to the work of their parents (Col. 1:28-29).
  • Evangelize and disciple other children, youth and parents, as the Lord should bring our way and as we shall go out and find (Mat. 28:18-20).

We acknowledge that these goals, especially the first one, require extensive Elder involvement.

Core Commitments

  1. Uphold parental authority.
  2. Recognize the parent’s responsibility to bring up their children “in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.”
  3. Supplement, not replace, the work of Christian parents.
  4. Seek to evangelize and disciple the whole family, not just the children or youth of unsaved parents.
  5. Work against being a “drop off” children’s or youth ministry by encouraging parents who are KBC members to serve or participate in their child’s ministry (i.e., as a nursery volunteer by mom or a helper in Children’s Church, Sunday school, AWANA or Student Ministry, as appropriate.)
  6. Work toward integration of our teens into the overall life of our church, yet realizing there are appropriate times for them to be away from their parents and under the supervision of other Christian adults. We will integrate by …

a. Encouraging baptism and modified church membership for our teens who give evidence of conversion.
b. Making disciples in the context of whole church family, not a separate church of youth.
c. Helping young people see the faith of older members through intentional service and interaction with the rest of the church body.

7. Encourage and teach fathers, as needed, to spiritually lead their families in both formal and informal times of teaching and in regular participation in corporate worship.
